83 Persons Die, 836 Infected As Diphtheria Spreads To 8 States
The National Primary Health Care Development Agency says Nigeria has recorded 83 deaths and 836 confirmed cases of diphtheria since the beginning of this year.
Executive Director, NPHCDA, Faisal Shuaib said this on Monday in Abuja during a news briefing on the diphtheria outbreak response.
He said, “From May 2022 to July 2023, an estimated 2,455 suspected cases have been reported in 26 states.
As of July 27, 2023, 836 of these cases have been confirmed in 33 local government areas across eight states: Cross River, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Lagos, Osun, Yobe, and FCT.
“Tragically, 83 deaths have been reported from these confirmed cases, making vaccination against this deadly disease critically important, especially for our children.”

In fulfillment of its assurance to do expeditious screening and confirmation of the 28 ministerial nominees sent to it last Thursday by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Senate commenced the process on Monday.
Fourteen of the nominees scaled the screening hurdle on the floor of the Red Chamber.
Contrary to its assurance of rigorous screening, seven of the nominees were accorded the privilege of the “bow and go” convention .
Subsidy pain: Tinubu rolls out relief package
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday unfolded a raft of relief packages to cushion petrol subsidy removal pain.
He announced the plan to spend billions of naira between now and March next year, to boost the economy and reflate businesses.
Also, a massive injection of fund into agriculture and agro-allied businesses was made known.In a broadcast last night, the President said:
“To strengthen the manufacturing sector, increase its capacity to expand and create good-paying jobs, we are going to spend N75 billion between July 2023 and March 2024.
Tinubu attacks hardship with N500bn palliatives
PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu yesterday, unveiled measures to cushion the effects of the economic downturn, caused by fuel subsidy removal, in the country, telling Nigerians he understood the hardship and came to help, not to hurt them.
He, however, approved N100 billion for the procurement of 3000 20-seater buses fueled by Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, to ease the high cost of transportation caused by fuel subsidy removal.
The President also said his administration would energise micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and the informal sector as drivers of growth with N125 billion.
He said of the sum, N50 billion would be spent on conditional grants to one million nano businesses between now and March 2024, explaining that the government’s target was to give N50,000 each to 1,300 nano business owners in each of the 774 local governments across the country.
Hardship: Tinubu Begs For Understanding, Labour Insists On Strike
President Bola Tinubu has pleaded with Nigerians to exercise patience with the economic challenges the country is facing, even as he unveiled policy measures to tackle them.
President Tinubu’s appeal comes a day ahead of the rally and strike called by the organised labour following a seven-day ultimatum to the Tinubu administration to reverse the economic policies that have led to hardship among the masses.
But in a nationwide broadcast to Nigerians last night, he emphasised the need to eliminate the fuel subsidy, stating that it had become a burden on the nation’s finances
