A building under construction in the Dorayi Babba area of Gwale Local Government, Kano State, collapsed, claiming the lives of six people, including the owner and his child who were present at the site.

Daily News 24 reports that the collapse also left eight others injured, currently receiving treatment at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

This online newspaper gathered that the victims included construction workers and passersby seeking shelter during a morning rainfall.

Auwal Ahmad, the Ward Head of Dorayi Babba, expressed sorrow over the incident, stating, “It’s an ugly and pitiful incident that occurred at our area, Unguwar Jakada. Some innocent builders were caught up while looking for their daily bread. I have with me five bodies of the dead, and I can see another one being brought out. Five people have sustained various degrees of injuries.”

Isma’il Umar, Second In Command to the Officer in Charge of the Surveillance Unit of the Kano State Hisbah Command, confirmed the incident, remarking that the cause of the collapse remains unclear.

While Authorities are expected to provide more details as investigations into the tragic incident continue, our reporter gathered that the death toll increases.

NEMA confirms 3 dead, 2 injured in recent Kano building collapse

Earlier in April, 2024, Daily News 24 had reported that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed three persons dead and two injured in a three-storey building collapse incident at Kuntau Quarters, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano.

Dr Nuradeen Abdullahi, NEMA Kano Territorial Coordinator, confirmed the incident and casualty figures to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Kano.

“We received a distressed call today at about 9:20 a.m from a good Samaritan that a three- storey building under construction collapsed at Kuntau quarters.

“On receiving the information, we quickly sent our rescue team to the scene.

“So far, five persons were rescued and taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, out of which three were confirmed dead, while two victims sustained injury and are receiving treatment” Abdullahi said.

He noted that the search and rescue operation was still ongoing to rescue those trapped.

“NEMA rescue team, Kano State Fire Service, Police, red Cross, NSCDC and SEMA among others are still at the site of the incident to ensure removal of other trapped victims,” Abdullahi said
