An explosion suspected to have been caused by a planted Improvised Explosive Device (IED) occurred at the bustling Buni Yadi market in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State on Friday.

The incident, which took place around 12:30 PM, resulted in injuries to a young girl, according to a resident of Buni, Ali Hassan, as reported by Channels Television.

The identity and current health status of the injured girl have not yet been disclosed. However, Captain Muhammad Shehu, spokesman for the Sector 2 Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai, confirmed the explosion and provided additional details. Captain Shehu revealed that another IED was discovered in the market but was successfully defused by the Army, preventing further potential casualties.

Captain Shehu emphasized that the incident was the result of a planted IED, not a suicide bombing. He assured the public that the only victim of the explosion is currently receiving treatment at a health facility in Buni Yadi.

“Buni Yadi, located 54 kilometers from Damaturu, the state capital, was the most severely affected local government area in Yobe State during the two years it was under Boko Haram insurgent control,” Captain Shehu added, highlighting the area’s history of violence and the ongoing security challenges.

The prompt response by the Army in defusing the second IED has been commended, as it likely averted further harm. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and have increased security measures in the region to prevent similar occurrences.

Residents of Buni Yadi and surrounding areas are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities to help ensure the safety and security of the community.
