The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the killing of 28 herdsmen and hundreds of their cattle in a bomb blast that occurred in the Doma Local Government Area of the state.

The State Commissioner of Police, Maiyaki Muhammed gave the confirmation to Channels Television in an interview in Lafia, the state capital.

Governor Abdullahi Sule also confirmed the ugly incident and assured the people of the state that measures have been put in place to ensure peace in the state.

The herdsmen, the police noted, were returning from Benue State on Tuesday with their cattle after retrieving them from forest guards who had seized them when the ugly incident happened.

Muhammed said, “They went to collect their cows from Benue that were seized from Benue Guards. From there, they heard a kind of explosion which result in the death of so many lives.

“To the best of my knowledge, as at yesterday (Wednesday), 27 people were buried. Information available to us also has it that one person who was also admitted here in Lafia also died. That for now is the information we have, we don’t have more than that.”

He added that security have been reinforced in the area to stall a reprisal and to breach of law and order.

Muhammed said the police are in contact with the leaders of Fulani herders and the Emirs in the area to forestall reprisals.
