In Kano State, a man identified as Abdullahi Idris has been arraigned in a Sharia court on serious charges, including malice, arson, and attempted murder.

The charges stem from an incident in which Idris allegedly set his girlfriend, Saโ€™adatu Ibrahim, on fire after she turned down his marriage proposal.

Idris, a resident of Rimi town in the Sumaila Local Government Area (LGA), reportedly had a brief relationship with Ibrahim, who is a divorced woman. The relationship lasted for only seven days before Ibrahim declined Idrisโ€™s proposal to marry him. This rejection is believed to have provoked the violent act.

During the court proceedings, Idris pleaded not guilty to all charges. The prosecutor, Barrister Maryam Jubril, requested an additional date for the re-arraignment of Idris. Consequently, the presiding Khadiyya, Rakiya Lami Sani, ordered that Idris be remanded in prison custody. The court has adjourned the case to September 16, when further legal actions will be taken.
