Blessing Alims, the first female President of the Student Union Government (SUG) at the University of Calabar, has addressed concerns regarding her recent appointment of 50 individuals to advisory roles within her administration.
The announcement, made in a letter dated August 1, 2024, has stirred debate on social media, with critics comparing her decision to what they describe as the “wasteful government” in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by her Press Secretary, Madueke Chinenye, Alims defended her choice, emphasizing its necessity for effective governance. “The Students’ Union Government is tasked with ensuring the welfare and progress of our entire university community. Just as a single tree does not make a forest, effective governance for a student body of over 42,000 requires a collaborative effort. It is essential to have a strong and diverse team to implement our initiatives successfully,” Alims said.
The University of Calabar, with its 20 faculties and over 110 departments, is a large and complex institution. Alims highlighted that her approach to appointing aides ensures representation from every segment of the student body. “Appointing aides ensures representation from each faculty and department, which is crucial for effective student mobilisation and governance. This approach allows us to address the unique needs of each segment of our student population,” she noted.
Alims also clarified that the appointments were voluntary and unpaid, aimed at career development rather than financial gain. “They are designed to foster career development, instilling a sense of duty and motivation in the appointees. Each aide underwent a rigorous screening process by the Senate Committee, took an Oath of Office, and is eager to contribute their skills and creativity to the administration,” she explained.
The President praised the appointees, some of whom have earned national and international recognition for their voluntary efforts. She expressed confidence that the new aides will meet the expectations set for them.
Alims, who is studying Peace Studies and Conflict Resolutions in the Department of Political Science, was elected SUG President on June 14, 2024.
