Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Monday elects new executives that will pilot the affairs of the association for the next four years, the election that was held in the early hours of Monday took place at the Haliru Abdu Stadium in Birnin Kebbi.
The polls were graced and attended by the former minister of youths and sport, Solomon Dalung, and the South Sudan president of athletic federation General Samia Lako.
Earlier, in his speech, the former Minister of Youths and Sports Dalung said there is no alternative to democracy.
He stated that some misunderstood the supervisory role of the Ministry as meddling in the affairs of AFN.
At the end of the peaceful and fairly conducted election, Ibrahim Shehu Gusau returned elected with 20 votes.
He defeated his opponent Mr. Uche Ukomia who got 2 votes, while Mr. Sunday Adebayo was elected first Vice President and Mrs. Nneka Nkyi as the second Vice President.
In his speech, shortly after he was announced the winner, Gusau thanked the delegates for their support he promised to live up to their expectations in the next four years, he added that athletic have engaged more people than football “I will carry everyone along and I will improve the welfare of athletes in the country and will maintain our dominance over other sports”.
Highlights of the occasion include the oath of office  and presentation of certificates to the newly elected officials and dissolution of the board, subsequent elections will be conducted by the sworn-in officials into another post as the second segment
Though two persons are laying claim to the  AFN seat as two parallel elections were held in Kebbi and Abuja and each poll produced president, Gusau was declared winner in Kebbi while his opponent at Abuja.
