Suspected gunmen killed a Chinese expatriate and disarmed some police officers at a mining site in Iboko, Izzi Local Government Area, Ebonyi.
SP Chris Anyanwu, Spokesperson for the Ebonyi Police Command, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by phone on Sunday in Abakaliki that the incident had yet to be confirmed by the command.
“It has not been confirmed,” Anyanwu said, “but believe me, I will confirm that tomorrow.”
Mr Steve Emenike, Chairman of the state’s Izzi Local Government Area, described the killing as a “embarrassment.”
The suspected hoodlums arrived on motorcycles, according to Emenike.
He stated that the council had reconstituted the formidable Vigilante Group and had prohibited motorbike operation in the area between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
“We are working hard to determine the root causes of the incident, and we are collaborating with security agencies such as the Police and DSS to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
“We cannot accept or tolerate this state of insecurity any longer.” Our people are peaceful, and we will not allow evil to sprout.
According to some eyewitnesses who preferred anonymity, the hoodlums disarmed the police officers who were guarding the Chinese during the attack.
“The victim’s body has been deposited at a mortuary in Abakaliki,” he added. (NAN)
