Since the establishment of the Warawa sexual assault reform centre (SARC) in 2016 to ameliorate the alarming rate of rape and sexual assault cases, theWarawa SARC has immensely contributed to the effective management of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) cases in the Local Government Area. (LGA).
Owing to population growth in Kano state, certain women are put at risk of being sexually abused. Thus, the global community has set aside every 25th December to mark the international day for the elimination of violence against women and girls. The annual global event which is celebrated from 25th November through the 10th December galvanizes actions against women and girls around the world.
Consequently, topping the list of LGAs with the highest cases of violence against women and children in Kano is Dala LGA followed closely by Kumbotso, Nassarawa, Tarauni amongst other metropolitan LGAs in the state. Irrespective of this, silence, stigma, and impunity have continued to trail victims of SGBV against women and children.

Addressing this menace, the Kano State GBV response team/Sexual Assault Referral Center Warawa- SARC in partnership with the Association of Free Legal Aid Service providers, supported by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) is celebrating the 16 days of activism for the eradication of violence women and girls by public sensitization and media campaigns in the state.
Speaking to journalists earlier, Barrister Huwaila Ibrahim the Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) called on the Kao State governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to establish a special court to handle SGBV cases, adding that “the business of protection of women and children is everyone’s business.”
Barr. Huwaila also thanked the partners of RoLAC and the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), as their support and commitment towards ending SGBV victims are yielding results. She also called on well-meaning individuals in Kano State to support various Sexual Assault Referral Centers in the state.
