A Magistrates’ Court in Jos on Thursday sentenced a 35-year-old laborer, Fwangmun Danung, to a year’s imprisonment for insulting and intimidating his father.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the Magistrate, Mr. Tapmwa Gotep, sentenced Danung after he pleaded guilty.

Gotep gave him an option of N10,000 or six months for insulting his father and another six months without a fine for intimidating his father.

The judge said the judgment would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such acts.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Inspector Frank Alex, told the court that the case was reported on December 26, 2022, at the Rantya Police Station by the complainant, Othniel Danung.

The convict was said to have dragged his father out of the house and called him a useless and irresponsible man.

The prosecution said the convict turned on the gas and threatened to burn down the house.

The convict also demanded that his father settle him for N200,000.

The offense, he said, is punishable under the provisions of Sections 377 and 379 of the Plateau State Penal Code Law.

In another development, a painter, Obinnah Mikel, was on Thursday docked in a Grade I Area Court in Karu, Abuja, for allegedly stealing building materials worth N425,000.

The police charged Mikel, 35, who lives in Jabi, Abuja, with theft.

The prosecution counsel, Mr. Ade Adeyanju, told the court that the matter was reported at the Maitama Police Station by Bakare Demilade of Agades Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja.

Adeyanju told the court that the defendant, on January 24, went to Demilade’s building site located in Wuse II, Abuja, and stole a cutting machine worth N65,000 and a drilling machine worth N50,000.

He said he also stole two mobile phones worth N50,000 and plaster of Paris materials worth N260, 000, all totaling N425, 000.

The offense, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Penal Code.

The prosecutor said during the police investigation, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of his action.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Mr. Umar Mayana granted the defendant bail with one surety and ordered that the counsel appear at the next adjournment to formalize the bail.

He adjourned the case until March 6 for mention.
