UN, US, ECOWAS Flay Niger’s Junta’s Plan To Prosecute Bazoum

The United Nations, United States and ECOWAS have voiced outrage over threats by Niger’s military rulers to try detained President Mohamed Bazoum, saying the move would worsen tensions.

On Sunday, Niger’s putschists that toppled Mohamed Bazoum said they would “prosecute” the ousted president for “high treason” and “undermining the security” of the country.

“We are incredibly dismayed by reports that President Bazoum’s unjust detention has gone even a step further,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.

“This action is completely unwarranted and unjustified and, candidly, it will not contribute to a peaceful resolution of this crisis,” he added.

Naira slump: CBN clamps down on speculators, restricts diaspora remittances

Following the tumbling of the naira at the parallel market in recent times, the Central Bank of Nigeria has started introducing foreign exchange intervention measures aimed at clamping down on currency speculators in the foreign exchange markets.

Acting Governor of the CBN, Folashodun Shonubi, made the disclosure to State House correspondents on Monday at the Presidential Villa after briefing President Bola Tinubu on what the bank was doing to halt the slide of the naira.

He said Tinubu expressed his concern over the effects of the recent developments in the foreign exchange market, particularly on average citizens.

According to Shonubi, the volatility of the naira in the parallel market is not solely driven by economic factors, but also speculative demand.

‘We want to go back to school’: Untold story of out-of-school kids in Ibadan

Ibadan is one of the largest cities in Nigeria, located 119 kilometres (74 miles) northeast of Lagos and 120 kilometres (75 miles) east of the Nigerian international border with the Republic of Benin.

Ibadan is naturally drained by four rivers with many tributaries: Ona River in the North and West; Ogbere River towards the East; Ogunpa River flowing through the city and Kudeti River in the Central part of the metropolis. In this urban centre is a growing number of out-of-school children who have now become vagabonds on the street following the state of the nation.

It is sad to note that Nigeria, according to the 2022 global data on out-of-school children by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), has the highest figures for out-of-school children globally.

Tinubu’s reforms face stress test amid Labour threats, FX scarcity

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its civil society allies have threatened to embark on immediate industrial action if the pump price of petrol is increased from its current N617 per litre.

This is just as another threat comes from marketers of premium motor spirit (PMS) who have insisted that the shutdown of fuel stations, as well as a significant increase in the pump price of petrol remains almost unavoidable considering the current market reality.

Labour is also frustrated by what it described as the lack of commitment on the part of the government to discuss new minimum wage and fuel subsidy removal palliative.

The negotiation has stalled with committees set up on the issue almost redundant.

It’s economic shutdown if petrol price rises again — Labour

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday threatened to shut down the economy without giving notice to the government, if the petrol pump price was increased again.

It also raised alarm over the alleged hijack of the duties of the Ministry of Labour and Employment by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, and the Federal Ministry of Justice.

But the Presidency in a swift reaction, said President Bola Tinubu is concerned about economic hardship in the country and is working hard to ameliorate the situation.
