Tinniswood earned the title of the world’s oldest man in April 2024, following the death of Venezuelan Juan Vicente Perez, who was 114. His family said in a statement, โHis last day was surrounded by music and love,โ also expressing gratitude to those who cared for him over the years.
Having been born in the same year the Titanic sank and living through both World Wars, Tinniswood reflected on his remarkable longevity in an interview with Guinness World Records. He humbly attributed his long life to โpure luck.โ
โYou either live long or you live short, and you canโt do much about it,โ Tinniswood said. However, he also offered advice on moderation, stating, โIf you drink too much or you eat too much or you walk too much, if you do too much of anything, youโre going to suffer eventually.โ
Tinniswood served in World War II in an administrative role with the Royal Army Pay Corps before working in accounts for the oil companies Shell and BP. A lifelong supporter of Liverpool Football Club, he was known for his weekly tradition of enjoying fish and chips every Friday.
Tinniswoodโs passing leaves Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, who is 116, as the worldโs oldest living woman.
