Gunmen suspected of being armed robbers stormed UBA, Zenith, and First Bank branches in Ankpa, Kogi State, on Tuesday.
The incident, which occurred around 2 p.m., created tension in the area.
According to an eyewitness, Lucy Yongu, who told DAILY POST about the incident, about 30 gunmen invaded the town and went straight to the UBA branch before moving on to Zenith Bank and then First Bank.
The assailants, she claims, took unspecified sums of money from both customers and bankers.
“They came in on a convoy of several vehicles, shooting sporadically while the attack was going on,” she explained. They had been there for over an hour and no security personnel had intervened.
“Some residents are still unable to leave their homes.
“We are still in awe of how these men were able to carry out the attack for so long without the military or police intervening; it still amazes me.”
Following the departure of the gunmen, a combined team of security operatives moved towards the area to restore normalcy.
Attempts to contact the State Police Command were futile because, as of press time, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, was unable to take calls or respond to text messages sent to him.
